Periods are always 20 minutes long. When you change the period length, it speeds up/slows down the clock so those 20 minutes pass at an accelerated or normal rate. By default, periods are 4 minutes long. So, the 20-minute clock is sped up so it counts down in 4 minutes. If you change periods to being 20 minutes, they will count down at the normal rate.
