Ah right, I forgot all about the 6to3 and 6to9 dekes. I don't know if I have a crooked thumb or what but I always find manual dekes with R3 to never do what I want.
Wouldn't it be easier to automatically forehand deke when you're by yourself on the ice and auto-deke into the closest opposing player (let's say within 7 or so feet) with a tap of LB/L2 and remove the manual deke for something else altogether?
Community ManagerNot a bad idea, but I'd also hate to see this functionality removed for the people that use it. I used to use the more manual method, but just tapping LT/L2 has been working very well since it was implemented. It's extremely uncommon to have my player rotate in a direction I'm not expecting. I'm not saying because of that your idea isn't needed though. It's possible these controls could change at some point, but for now, if there are any issues with spins going the wrong way, it would be good to see some video.
Didn't this used to work by either holding X (protect puck) or not? I feel like I had this figured out and something changed in the last two or three weeks, experiencing the same sort of "random" will I spin into the guy and lose the puck, or away from the guy and keep it, as OP suggests. Same applies to the "half spin" to skate backwards and look for a pass and not get poke checked.

Yes. I went and got a new controller because I was tired of the "too early" problem on faceoffs that we briefly talked about, figuring maybe just the controller I had since I bought the system is getting worn out. I'm having far less faceoff issues now, but the spin control is just "gone" (and was before swapping controllers, too). I thought I had that re-solved, too, with "left hander on the left side, hold X" getting the right spin, and same for right-on-right-side, but nope... just seems random compared to when I first learned, now, so thought maybe something had changed. I'll try to pay attention to my angle relative to the defender... a lot of times, that just results in spinning into the boards, though, and losing the puck or getting held (and losing the puck or not getting a penalty called).
Community ManagerI don't normally use this move along the boards. I cut more towards the center, traveling away from the boards and have been able to easily spin around defenders with a quick tap of L2/LT. If you could get some video, that may help understand what you're experiencing. If you hold X/A down at the same time, that normally rotates you away from the defender and in the direction of the boards.

For the last couple weeks, though, this has gone out the window. It's felt like no matter which hand my player is, which side of the ice I'm on, or whether I use X or not, my guy spins into the D and coughs it up. That's why I thought maybe something had changed in the controls, and jumped in when I saw this thread.
I'll try to be more aware of what I'm doing, I guess.
Simply tapping L2 does not automatically spin in correct direction most of the time to get around a defender in my experience. Most of the time my player spins right into the defender when it should be spinning in the opposite direction. And I am still not able to spin manually, it works sometimes but other times spins in wrong direction.
For me, manual spin always works properly, but it's so slow, it's worthless. The entire opposing team packs the front of the net halfway through the move.
It's like "keyboard turners" from back in the WoW days 😃
The more or more I try this in practice mode too, whether by simply tapping L2 or by trying to use R stick, it seems random.
Has anyone tried this on PS5 system? Want to rule out that PS5 with the game is not the issue for spinning. I doubt it but it’s worth checking.
Community ManagerI play on Xbox so I can't try this out on a Playstation. We're not seeing other reports about this and I have been seeing it used in games. I use it multiple times in pretty much every game I play. Except in EASHL. As a defender, I don't get a lot of opportunities to use it. At any rate, I'll absolutely watch out for any issues, but I'm spinning in the intended direction and it's incredibly useful for getting around defenders. If you can provide some video, I'll review it for any issues.
Community ManagerIt would be best to record it through the built-in game-DVR on your console. Then, upload it to YouTube and provide a link. You can also publish it through your console and provide a link to the video.
FWIW, over the last day or two, I've exaggerated the time between holding X (to protect the puck) and pressing L2 (to spin, half or otherwise), and it's back to behaving as expected. Would be good to get credit for the combination a little faster, but whatever.
