Didn't this used to work by either holding X (protect puck) or not? I feel like I had this figured out and something changed in the last two or three weeks, experiencing the same sort of "random" will I spin into the guy and lose the puck, or away from the guy and keep it, as OP suggests. Same applies to the "half spin" to skate backwards and look for a pass and not get poke checked.
@davehoehn970 You can protect the puck and just skate in a circle but it has a much higher chance of getting checked since you lose all momentum. The game won't count this as a proper deke, however.
Half-spin is just holding L2 and releasing - I think that is affected by the kind of turn you're trying to make if I'm not mistaken
