change "Legacy game installers"

I am on my computer, Windows 10, and signed in as admin. I am the only user. I am trying to change game and cache folders in Origin which is on drive F:. When I try to change "Legacy game installers", I get the error: "Origin is not able to save games here because the folder is read-only. Please choose another folder." When I use Windows Explorer to go to those folders, I am unable to remove the read only from these folders, as it shows clear, but closing and reopening properties it is back.

I read the solution on EA Answers HQ and it said to open "Windows Defender Security Center", select "Virus & threat protection", and then choose "Virus & threat protection settings". "Under Controlled folder access, turn it on or off."

I am unable to open "Under Controlled folder access". I get an error message: "Page not available. Your IT administrator has limited access to some areas of this app, and the item you tried to access is not available. Contact IT helpdesk for more information.". When I open "Windows Defender Security Center", I see the message "Avast Antivirus Avast Antivirus is turned on". So, I am assuming this must be the IT administrator they are referring to.

If Avast is controlling "Under Controlled folder access", how do I access it? I tried disabling Avast, but nothing changed. I have also asked about it on the Avast Forum. No response yet.

This started when Origin updated yesterday. The game and cache folders had already been set. Origin is installed on drive F:, as well as all my games. When I tried changing the game folder, I selected the F: drive and Origin added F:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games. What I wanted was F:\Origin Games, so I changed it. Origin installed the "Legacy game installers" on C:\ProgramData\Origin\DownloadCache.  Why does it keep trying to add game files on drive C: (C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games)?

Is there a way to roll Origin back or install an earlier version without losing my games?

I solved the problem! I right-clicked on the folder F:\Origin and selected properties, then clicked the "Security" tab and then Edit. I changed everything to Full Control. I then clicked on Add and typed Everyone, selected Check Names and clicked OK. I then allowed Full Control, clicked Apply and OK. I opened Origin and was able to change the "Legacy game installers" to the correct drive. Thanks!

Hey @dwharper34 is the computer that you are seeing this issue with a personal one or one you got from work, school or elsewhere?

Generally, those errors point to restrictions put in place by an admin to stop users from installing or making changes to work or school computers.

If it is a personal computer and you think that it may be Avast then I'd recommend reaching out to their support for further assistance.,

  • This is my personal computer I built from scratch. It has a Rog Maximus IX Hero motherboard. I am the admin. No one else has ever used my computer. I have already posted on Avast's forum. https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=306515.0

I have had no replies that resolved this. I believe that loading an earlier version of Origin and preventing automatic updates, may be the best solution. I don't know how to view Origin's version or how to order the one right before it. With it everything was working fine. I had already changed the folders without any problems.

This the last installation file I downloaded: OriginThinSetup_v10.5.98.47688.exe. I automatically updated several times because Origin was not recognizing my games. Updating worked, so I upgraded again and this happened. Any thoughts?

Hey @dwharper34 if you fully disable Avast do you continue to see the issue?

It may be worth checking your Windows admin rights to ensure that you have full access as the error you are seeing is system-related rather than Origin.

  • @EA_Darko  I have tried disabling Avast and it did not help. My Windows rights show me as administrator. I removed all ransomware protections for the F: drive and on most allowed apps on the F: drive. I did try making my own folders. both on F: and on E:. Each folder I made was read only. It looks like all my drives are read only. So I guess it must be the system. How would I fix that?
