My laptop says insufficient drive space available

I had purchased the sims 4 game and 5 expansion packs. When I go to download the game on my new laptop it says there is insufficient drive space. It also say to free up 8.33 GB of space or select a different location. I just bought the laptop so I don't have any files to delete. Is there a way to still play the game?

  • @Jasminejnh  How much free storage does your laptop have?  In Windows, open a File Explorer window, click This PC, and list the total and free storage for the hard drive(s).  If you have a Mac, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of your screen, select About This Mac, then Storage, and list the free and total numbers.

I'm having a similar problem on my MAC, but when I searched for the free space like you explained, I should still have plenty of free space. Any idea why I can't download my Sims 4 game due to insufficient storage still?

@drtkersch  You'd typically need double the free storage for everything you wanted to download, plus maybe a small extra margin.  Origin often allocates space to download files and then copy them to their install location, especially with older games.  The Sims 4 base game is 15 GB once installed, so having at least 35 GB free is a good idea.  It may also help to install only the base game, and then add packs later.

If that isn't the issue, run the Origin reset tool, then restart your computer.

Sometimes though, there's no obvious reason why Origin would refuse to download a game into macOS.  A few people have had success just by trying over and over, with Origin resets in between.  It's not a great answer, but there's no definitive fix at this point.

  • So I had the same issue when I was trying to install the sims 4 and all the expansion packs.

On my MacBook, the storage information in "About This Mac" showed that I had over 140GB available but the download still required ~4GB and was increasing little by little.

However, I saw that in Disk Utility that there was something called "Other Volumes" taking 90% of my available disk space that wasn't appearing in the "About This Mac" storage tab. I used CleanMyMac X to free up purgeable space and it removed half of that "Other Volumes" and finally allowed me to download and install the game.

    Hope this helps!

  • I have the same issue i have plenty of space on my pc but it shows

Free up 91 GB but..... i already have more than 91.10 Gb im my pc plus it took me a long time to sign up😢

  • @Y0j3T  How much space do you have on each of your computer's drives, and which drive is Origin trying to use to install games?  You can see the full file path under Application Settings > Installs & Saves.

i have 18.5.GB left altogether i have free of 18.50GB👍

  • @Y0j3T  18.5 GB is a lot less than the 91 GB Origin is asking you to free up, unless you typed one of the numbers incorrectly.
