I know, this is a shame that EA or someone else never addressed this problem, but i recently got the same issues when i'm trying to change my username and this problem keep showing up every single time. I've been trying to use Number/Caps/Dash/Underscore, none of them does work. And, for some reason, i've been thinking...
Is this problem only shows up when you change your first username ? And you just can't change them for the second time ?
And if yes, then WHY DON'T YOU JUST SAY IT ON THE SETTINGS where the input textbox shown ?
For example, why don't you just put the warning, such as "The Username Can Only Be Renamed Once" or something ? Come on, you gotta be kidding me if this is the really problem.
Anyway, I WANT ANSWERS, not a link redirecting to endless thread that had the same problem, saying it was already solved, but it does not yet.
Thanks for any response, whoever you are.
No, this doesn't happen when first changing your ID. I've changed mine multiple times without an issue up until the past few days, where everything is either "taken" or "contains a prohibited word or character". Seems like this is an Origin problem.

Happened to me yesterday, seems pretty messed up that I cannot have "XD" in my name any more. since the name I wanted was taken. I cannot revert either after trying to see if the name I wanted was no longer in use.
Also yesterday I was able to have the user id "offtohangmyself" - tried it as a joke as I couldn't get my previous user ID back and it worked. Changed it to my current name today and now cannot go back to it. IDk, its seems the word censoring in user ID's is messed up.

Hey @EA_Kristi, I checked around 11:30pm EST last night and was able to successfully change my ID. Maybe it was time-locked or a server restarted? At any rate, thanks for the help and good luck to the others!
(PS I was mo7amed131, but now I'm not :D)

Hello all,
We have received some clarification on this situation.
For security reasons, there is a limit on how frequently the Origin ID can be changed. So if you are running into this error and you have recently changed your ID, please wait a few days and then try again.
My apologies for any confusion or inconvenience caused.

Hi all,
We're in the process of making some changes to this restriction (planned for the 26th). Could you please confirm to me if you're still getting stuck trying to change your name?
Thank you,

This is still an issue.
It would be immeasurably helpful if there was a list or even some sort of vague guideline for what words and characters are prohibited.
As it stands now my only option is to engage in a guessing game using the ID field and hope that whatever I type doesn't get flagged as "prohibited". This is just very bad UX and cannot be the intended method of selecting a user name.
Further complicating things is the fact that while certain seemingly harmless words get flagged, other obviously bad ones are being let through.
Example:
This clearly objectionable and obviously offensive one == no flag. Furthermore "Sex" and "Sexual" are not being flagged at all leading to all sorts of vile combinations some of which I honestly considered posting here to prove a point but decided against. BTW some of those usernames were not only not being flagged but had already been registered.
And yet...
This one... == prohibited
What is going on here? "Hot" is being flagged?
Is it Raptor? It's Raptor isn't it
C'mon
This really leads one to question if there's any logic in the banning of words here at all.
EA, PLEASE give your users some sort of guideline on acceptable user names, it could go a long way to clearing up some of the confusion and frustration around this issue. If a user types in a prohibited user name, don't just leave them hanging or you'll have more threads like this one.
Also its probably time to review the logic behind either that ID field or the list of prohibited words because there are some obvious holes and glaring omissions.
