Spore does not launch

I have Spore on Origin and Windows 8 64-bit. I have the latest drivers. I recently bought Spore and so far I have been unable to launch it. What happens is I try to launch the game from Origin, Origin says the game is launching and then SporeApp.exe briefly appears in Task Manager. Then SporeApp.exe exits. Sometimes I get a message error "SporeApp.exe has stopped working. Windows is searching for a solution to this problem." but this rarely occurs. Nothing changes on the screen (I still see Origin and the Windows desktop - there's no black screen, no game launcher or anything of the sort), but the game does not run. So far I have tried:

• Restarting the computer
• Uninstalling and reinstalling
• Running in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3
• Running as administrator
• Changing the screen resolution to 1600x1200
• Changing the affinity of SporeApp.exe so it runs on only one core (I did this by typing start /affinity 01 sporeapp.exe into the Command Prompt in the SporeBin directory)
• Bypassing Origin and launching SporeApp.exe directly
• Patching to the latest version of Spore (using the patcher from this site since the Spore launcher didn't start)
• At first I tried to run the game with the Creepy & Cute add-on installed; after uninstalling reinstalling Spore I did not reinstall Creepy & Cute. This is the only add-on I own.

I have no idea what to try next. Do you have any advice on how I can get Spore to run?
