You have to accept that the game is unrealistic. In the end I took on the "Hit the ball and chase it" approach. The one thing about this game is that the short game is unrealistically easy. So getting up and down from around the green was pretty much guaranteed.
And though you don't know the wind speed... you still have the direction. And after a few shots you get a feel for what to expect.

I didn't sink every putt but my share for sure. I don't try and use math to breakdown every putt. I'm looking for a more realistic experience... so it was less about making the putt than enjoying a day on the course.
I eyeball my putts like in real life... you can get a sense of speed by using the meters. The one that shows a elevation view is really helpful... use it as a guide to slope to expect. From that you have a pretty good idea of how much distance to add or subtract from your stroke. Just remember it isn't a hard number... but more a multipler. Which I think was based on 10 feet. Meaning if it showed halfway up... for a 10 foot putt I need to hit it about 14 feet. For a 20 foot putt it was closer to a 28 foot putt.
These are not exact numbers... just going by memory. I also found hitting uphill putts ridiculously slow. My big issue with all golf games with putting is none of them have ever taken into consideration skid before roll. All games have the ball breaking the minute it leaves the putter face. In reality the ball will go straight before picking up friction and start breaking.
I'm sure you will figure it out. Playing without the grids does make the game score more realistically... and the worm cam is good in this game. I think even the pros miss half their putts from 10 feet.

I haven't played EA in months, my small group have gone back to 2K23. But from what I remember it was a lot easier to read greens in EA. And the cameras were a 100x better than 2K23.
We play sim settings in 2K23 with additional settings disabled. Personally I think the cameras in 2K23 are as bad as you could design them... and reading greens in 2K23 is a near impossible task. I see the greens breaking in the opposite direction in most cases. And depending on which side of the pin, I often see something different. It makes for an extremely frustrating round some days.
However, a couple of days ago I played with the green grids on and it felt like I was cheating. On the 2 rounds I played I shot -5 and -6 on some difficult TCG courses.
I believe the grids made between 5-10 difference in my score. I guess once you have played for awhile without something it is hard to go back. Like I said having grids on no longer feels right.
It seems I would rather be frustrated than make birdies and eagles. I missed a mittful of birdies from inside of 5 feet last night because of poor reads.
We play on PS5 as well...
