Same issue is happening to me. Spent credits to get a ball trail. Went to equip it, and just received a message saying that an unexpected error occured.
Go to equipment to get to your golf bag. Once you're in there, scroll down to your ball. Click into your ball and you should be able to equip from the third slot..
