If you are only shooting -1 or -2 on the arcade settings you must only be just getting into the game. I play basically on sim settings, with all the additional aids disabled with the exception of wind direction and the green grids. And will regularly shoot in the low 60's with the occasional round in the 50's.
Even without the green grids I average about -5 under calm conditions.
And I don't consider myself good at the game.
I don't think it is uncommon. I am sure most people with the game have shot in the 50's, especially after they have leveled up their characters.
Seems pretty good to me if you are shooting like that on SIM!
I can do low 60s (occasional 50s) on my modified Tour mode that I use for career (basically tour but swing/putting set to hard), and zoom and flight path turned off.
I just can’t seem to get the hang of sim though. For the life of me, I can’t tell the breaking direction of putts without the beads unless the break is extreme. Wind also screws me. It’s not like in real life where I can look at trees bending or the flagstick flapping (or pick up a few blades of grass and toss them in the air) and determine how many extra clubs I need.
I agree with the overall premise of the OP though. Penalty for bad shots is not enough (at least on modes above arcade).
