@tuckermaine1 You can but you play against them in asynchronous, independent fashion. You can sort of self regulate your play based on the order of play rules of golf (whoever is furthest away from the hole is next to hit). If you know your opponent is furthest away, you can rotate your aim to where your opponent is and watch them play their shot (if they're away), and if you're really adept with the controls, turn and track the shot after it's hit. Then it will be your turn to hit and your opponent can turn and watch you... if desired.
It takes a lot of effort to do this and it's pretty cumbersome to execute if you're trying to actually see your opponent before, during, and after their shot if you're tracking it, but it's there. It requires a bit of communication to make sure you're in agreement as to who's away, and where you're actually at on the course.
If they did ever introduce turn base play to this game, I'd like to have the option to watch my opponent from where my golfer would be standing in real life, and have the camera track his shot from that point of view. I always felt the sense of immersion is spoiled when I'm watching my opponent hit their shot from their swing camera.
PGA TOUR 2K23 does a pretty good job with this as their turn base multiplayer at least offers an option to stand off at like a 45 degree angle behind, and to either side of your opponent. It even tracks the shot from that perspective which really adds a unique and experience selling perspective.
