To me it has always made sense for exactly the reason you are conjecturing: 100% equals smooth controlled swing. 105% means you are trying to murder it and shoulder turning more than your normal consistent, effective swing.
I'd also submit there IS a bit of a premium on the path for overswings. Certainly, in my experience, the ball will go further offline if you overswing and deviate from the path as opposed to underwing deviations.
I know from other posts you started playing with spec less golfers without attributes applied. When I see a lot of posts about inconsistent swings and RNG, I always wonder where people are in the game, because while I would certainly agree that sub level 50/no specs there is a considerable amount of RNG, I'm really not seeing it after.
I would actually would agree with your assessment. When I was playing with a fully powered up character I was pretty deadly with my shot making. Which is why we started playing without attributes.
I also knew that keeping my swing with my drives under 100% ensured that I kept the ball in the fairway.
My problem is that the RNG plays far too much a role in this game. And that results should be based much more on player input rather than some random event.
The game is far too easy when you are powered up, and additional shot types just adds to the problem. And if you remove all these the game can get pretty random. It doesn't stop you from shooting low in the game... but it makes the game not enjoyable because until you get to a shot type with less dispersion like a chip or putt you never feel in control.
