Another thing I'll mention. Tour players hitting ~50% fairways isn't so much because they made bad swings with their drivers, but because the courses they play have over the years been designed/re-designed to put choices at common driving distances. Now you see fairways narrowing at 280 yards. Or tees are moved back so at around that distance now water is in play, or the curve of the fairway is now exposed at that distance, and you can drive through the curve.
When I'm missing the fairway in the game, it's usually more these reasons as well as opposed to a bad swing or "rng" sending me off track. Its more along the lines of I tried to cut the corner of a dogleg and misjudged and ended up in the rough. Or I decided to bust out the power drive even though the fairway narrows to 25 yards in the landing area.
In most cases the extra distance is worth the risk (especially in this game with no penalty from the rough).
One thing that always interests me is I am one of the few people who hits 3 wood frequently in online matches. I see people seem to always bust out the driver and fling it as far as possible regardless of the hole distance. For me, I won't hit driver on holes that can't be driven if you are going to be further out than 20 yards (out of flop range) but closer than 80 yards after the drive. 80 yards is that point where you can finesse shot with 2-3 different wedges and really select the appropriate amount of spin with club and height combo. If you are under 80 yards and get forced to use a pitch or sometimes even a finesse with a 60+, you will be less accurate.
