Re: there's a light green icon with a plus symbol on it. What does it mean?

That's the Skill Point symbol. Go to the Golfer tab and then the Skills section lets you spend them to upgrade your player. Doing so is a key part of the game as the player you start off with is frankly pretty rubbish!
