Ryder Cup PGA Update
I just watched the latest video released about the upcoming patch on Tuesday Sept 26th. Listening to the developers as they played was interesting. By the way you would think they would be better at...
@ELF014 I was watching some of this video and I couldn’t help but think it’s such a weak effort. Too much emphasis on aesthetics and nothing on getting gameplay right. If they have changed the cup physics from one extreme to the other, I’m even less optimistic about the game going forward. I have captured a putt I played that actually missed the hole and stopped an inch or so left side, but the ball sink thru the green and holed. Not even the original The Golf Club game was this poor and that game is almost a decade old. The pro pass seems to offer very little in the way of items adding to a store that’s already bare bones. The only thing I can praise them for is adding my real world Nike dri-fit tops the game…. That’s it.
LIterally the only two things EA have over 2K are licensed majors and graphics. Everything else, 2K is light years ahead of this effort EA put out which is nothing more than a mobile game similar to Golf Clash with new gen graphics geared to casuals. Maybe the devs played Golf Clash a lot and thought it represented golf accurately 🤦🏻♂️

Absolutely agree that current game focused on aesthetics and put gameplay on the backseat. For 2K, I have played 2K21 and 2K23 where they are lightyears ahead of current EA PGA Tour. IMHO, my favorite is Tiger Woods 14; that game was made 10 years ago and it is also lightyears ahead. TW14 had strong gameplay, multiple modes, an impressive photo gameface and voice options. Just not sure how another iteration of EA PGA Tour would look like in the Year 2525. By the way, that is a reference to a 1969 song called “In the Year 2525”.
When I read people say that 2K23 is more realistic than EA Sports PGA I wonder if those people play the real game. Here is an example. In 2K23 you can hit their so called pitch shot with 125 yards carry using a 5 iron. In addition the trajectory is like what you would get with a 9 iron. In fact all their short game shots from chips, pitched and flops all have the same loopy trajectory. The tip I received for the full swing in 2K23 from a guy who has been playing it for a while was pull the stick back and RAM it forward. So much for tempo!
The mechanics of chipping has improved from 2K21 but it is still basically how fast you push the stick forward (the downswing) that determines the power. In real life the carry distance of a chip is determined by the length of your backswing. You're not concerned with clubhead speed with chips!
They finally added a so called splash shot but you can hit a splash shot from any lie including the green. The developers obviously do not even know what a splash shot is.
I like the putting in 2K23 because it is synched perfectly with the movement of your putter and I think it is easier than putting in EA.
I don't know what version of 2K this is but they still don't have real life options like gimmes and mulligans. I understand that you shouldn't have them in a tournament but why not for casual rounds? They still don't have the option of choosing the holes to play, it's either the front 9 or the back 9 so if you wanted to play the 17th at Sawgrass you always have to play the first 7 holes on the back 9. When you finally get to the 17th you can't even try different clubs because there is no mulligans.
The rough is so penal on every course that you would think that all of them are set up for the U.S. Open.
I've always thought that none of the developers are golfers. How else do you explain divots on the tee box of 600 yard par 5's? Or calling their practice mode "Training" Have you ever heard a PGA Pro say that his training was going well?
I could go on and on including the look of their courses but 2K23 is not a realistic golf game.
@SLouis2001 @You have a right to your opinions but I would have to disagree with many of your points
Here is an example. In 2K23 you can hit their so called pitch shot with 125 yards carry using a 5 iron. In addition the trajectory is like what you would get with a 9 iron.
The maximum club I can pitch with in 2K is an 8 iron which does go 127 yards, but I do agree the trajectory has always seemed a little high to me as well.
In fact all their short game shots from chips, pitched and flops all have the same loopy trajectory.
I would have to agree in most cases I feel this could be reviewed.
The tip I received for the full swing in 2K23 from a guy who has been playing it for a while was pull the stick back and RAM it forward. So much for tempo!
I fully disagree with this comment. You need to be fully aware of your swing tempo. Ramming your joystick forward will cause a dead pull left on your shot for a righty and swing too slow will result in high short flare to the right. Again how penal will depend on the difficulty settings you play on. I have one friend who tends to hold the shot too long at the top of the swing and then swing too fast and he will hit a low worm burner about 60 yards with a driver. He is the only person I have seen able to do this.
The mechanics of chipping has improved from 2K21 but it is still basically how fast you push the stick forward (the downswing) that determines the power. In real life the carry distance of a chip is determined by the length of your backswing. You're not concerned with clubhead speed with chips!
Again I disagree with this premise. It's been a long time since I sat in a lecture for Mechanical Engineering but I'm pretty sure the greater the force the further an object will move.
In real golf you are actually accelerating your swing as you take a longer backswing giving you more FORCE, or as you say power. And it is about how consistent you are with replicating this that provides how good your results are.
Any of us could easily take a club back 12 inches and follow through like a full swing and send the ball all the way across the green.
They finally added a so called splash shot but you can hit a splash shot from any lie including the green. The developers obviously do not even know what a splash shot is.
I'm pretty sure SPLASH shots are exclusive to shots hit out of the sand. This was to prevent people from chipping out of sand traps which was far too easy.
I like the putting in 2K23 because it is synched perfectly with the movement of your putter and I think it is easier than putting in EA.
I am mixed about this comment. I think the green speeds and cup physics are far more realistic in 2K, but I like the actual putting in EA better. In 2K there is a dead zone (around my joystick) that doesn't allow me to feather my short putts. This is a programming issue as it was only noticable after 2K21. I had no issues in previous versions of the game.
I don't know what version of 2K this is but they still don't have real life options like gimmes and mulligans.
I'm not sure why this is needed. In EA it is taking longer for game to do this than for me to do it. And I don't miss my shot putts. Though the games should let you concede a hole in matchplay when so inclined.
They still don't have the option of choosing the holes to play, it's either the front 9 or the back 9 so if you wanted to play the 17th at Sawgrass you always have to play the first 7 holes on the back 9. When you finally get to the 17th you can't even try different clubs because there is no mulligans.
Yup I agree with you here... hopefully it will be included in a future release.
The rough is so penal on every course that you would think that all of them are set up for the U.S. Open.
I don't have any issues with this, you should be penalized when in a hazard. In fact I don't think the sand traps are penal enough. They should be adding in plugged lies for sand traps and tangled lies in long grass.
I've always thought that none of the developers are golfers. How else do you explain divots on the tee box of 600 yard par 5's?
I get your point... but I have seen amateurs take a divot with a driver where the ball was teed up high. But this is not a quibble I would die on a hill fighting for.
But I agree, I also question the amount of comprehension the team have for the game of golf. But then I put the onus on the person in charge of game design and not the developers themselves.
It is the person driving the boat that is taking you to the destination not the crew.
Or calling their practice mode "Training" Have you ever heard a PGA Pro say that his training was going well?
This is just a label, I personally don't have an issue with it. And in some countries people may actually use this term.
I could go on and on including the look of their courses but 2K23 is not a realistic golf game.
I would take gameplay over aesthetics any day for a game and 2K's graphics are more than serviceable in my opinion.
Don't get me wrong I think both games have a ways to go yet, but in my opinion 2K's offering is closer to a golfing experience. I personally think that experience has dropped off since being bought out by 2K and that we would be much further along if it was still owned by HB Studios... but again it just felt like HB Studio's was more attuned to actual golfers. Or as you pointed out people that are actually knowledgeable fans of the game.
