Bear in mind that only the start and end points of your swing line matter and that the end point is always the top position for your analogue stick. Improving your accuracy skill stats will also increase the mishit tolerance in a way that helps.
I'd say I hit angled swing plane shots as I intend about 90% of the time so they're usable but not trivial for me. I actually like that there is an added challenge to hitting more advanced shots like this.

Initially i was confused by the shot shaping mechanic as well and thought it might be broken, specially since some posts seemed to suggest that a few months back. Turned out i just needed to learn how the mechanic works:
Pull the stick down diagonal, then push up towards the center of the upper edge rather than purely diagonal up / mirroring the downstroke. Should yield a lot better and more expected results.
