There is an option in SETTINGS>GAMEPLAY>SHOT SHAPING... where you set it to just a vertical swing path.
This will be overridden if you use the SIM mode preset.
I'm not sure this angled swing plane was needed for the game. Though it is an advanced concept... you can learn to adapt to it. It seems more of an annoyance than a skill to learn. It just makes me want to hit more straight shots.
In real golf I don't need to change my swing, I just change my setup. This is one of the reasons I feel we have gamers designing the game rather than golfers.
First up the angled swing plane can't be disabled for online.
When I play a daily arcade or pro tournament it now feels very wrong to me to use the simplified swing plane for shaped shots. They should be harder to hit so it feels wrong to me when they aren't.
No this feature wasn't necessary and I disliked it when I first tried it, but having stuck with it I do now really think it's a positive feature. I get the feeling many didn't give it a fair try, plus many misunderstood the required swing line and so concluded it was harder than it really was.
Oh, and as many complain the game is too easy it's worth bearing in mind this is one element of greater challenge.

Agreed it is an element to provide more challenge. But it doesn't translate well to how you shape a ball in real life. And it is not often that you are required to hit shaped shots in this game anyway.
I personally like how 2K implemented the difficulty and shot mechanics much better.
But I do understand where you are coming from. I will hit a shaped shot in SIM mode when required, as you said it isn't overly difficult since the shot is hinged to the 12 o'clock position of the meter.
As long as you don't apply too much draw or fade it isn't too bad to control.
Note my point about accuracy affecting mishit tolerances too. This is part of the trade off vs high power builds for me. I use shot shaping on most holes and have no concerns using max shaping (and do have reasonable control stats so it's not super limited), but I also have max drive and approach accuracy to help. I do this not because it's 'necessary' but rather simply helpful.
Remind me how 2k increases difficulty for shaped shots? I played 2k21 a bit but not recently.
