Note my point about accuracy affecting mishit tolerances too. This is part of the trade off vs high power builds for me. I use shot shaping on most holes and have no concerns using max shaping (and do have reasonable control stats so it's not super limited), but I also have max drive and approach accuracy to help. I do this not because it's 'necessary' but rather simply helpful.
Remind me how 2k increases difficulty for shaped shots? I played 2k21 a bit but not recently.
I think we are of like mind on how we setup our characters. When I was playing with a skill character I maximized it around accuracy. I felt it was much better to be accurate than long. Especially when it came to the short game.
2K's difficulty resolves basically around 2 things... swing timing and swing path. What like about 2K's mechanics is that it is accurate... if you execute the shot it will come off as expected. What I don't like is that due to the lack of variance in the hardware it makes it far too easy easy to make shots. Plus the developer added some inherent buffers in the game to make it easier as well. In my opinion a perfectly straight shot should be 1 pixel wide and not several.
2K's mechanics are not perfect in my opinion either... but it is more realistic in how it is executed. But 2K does offer umpteem settings to allow you to find a niche setup to satisfy almost ever player. If you can be humble enough to set them for your playing level.
Except for the stupid swing speed of 2K, I would probably play it exclusively. I hate having to fight with game mechanics to make a shot.
But to answer your question... shot shaping is done at address... and not through the swing. Though if skilled enough it could be done there too by a mistimed swing. Early timing promotes a draw/hook... late a fade/slice. So as you can see it is more complex as there are layers to the 2K swing. Simple but... it can be difficult to execute. Sort of like real golf.
