Yes, this has happened to lots of players when the link to the server was not possible, it could be a weak WiFi or phone signal, and in my case, I used up my data allowance while in a place without WiFi signal.
Not too worry, next time the app opens with a good signal, the timer will reset correctly, you do not need to wait till your retirement to have a party.
