Zen Garden (Watering...)

So, I feel I am missing something in the garden.

I can not figure out what the point is of watering your sprouts. Yes, I know the obvious, you tap on the water drop so that it can grow. But what is the point of adding in the extra tapping requirement for a simple redundant visual effect?

It seems I can dig up both sprouts and watered plants from the pot if I don't like my decision. So what advantage is there to anything?

In any game, any action the user does should have some sort of impact, but from what I see, EA should have just eliminated the watering step as it seems totally redundant and a waste of a tap.

I am trying to figure out what I am missing here. Some hidden option?
