Acorn and Imp - Balance Discussion

I generally believe that Acorn and Imp are far too small both physically and visibly. It’s hard to see them, they are hard to hit, and by god are they a pain in numbers. Z-Mech is not powerful enough to balance with Imp. I’d like to spark a discussion about these characters with this post.

Nightcap is small, but she isn’t TOO small, and she is wide and has plenty visual tell on every attack to back it up. Parkour is busted, but that’s another story. Acorn has a generally high jump and a dash, which makes bunnyhopping an easy to abuse tactic. Imp has a double jump like Nightcap, but it hovers (even more so with Booster Booster) and makes it confusing when trying to shoot his small body while he hovers through the air.

I know it’s not an easy task to increase the size of a character model along with all of their customizations so I am not asking for that, but I feel that increasing their hitbox size even more might be necessary. It’s painful attempting to vanquish them point blank with characters like Corn and Sunflower, let alone from a distance. Also make Hardened only give 25 health for the love of all that is holy. Don’t make their hitboxes disjointed and bloated, but make them reasonably sized so that they aren’t an absolute pain to go up against without splash damage or ability spam.

On the other side of the spectrum, Z-Mech needs a real buff. The antithesis to the Imp and the reason why he has the Mech is a huge boost in power for a short period of time. Right now, there is absolutely no incentive to use the mech other than suicidal tactics, such as Explosive Escape and letting yourself get destroyed while in Missile Madness. Give it armor, increase Robo Laser’s damage output, fix the hitreg on Bionic Bash, and reduce the MASSIVE hitbox of Explosive Escape.

Oak is fine, but I’d really like if they buffed him so that he could truly be the counterpart to Space Station, such as giving an actual incentive to play the Acorn Passenger with a possible rework and buffing Roll for Damage. Space Station also needs a cooldown and startup time.

What is everyone else’s thoughts about these characters? Would a slight hitbox increase be reasonable? It would help if damage dropoff was added in general, so that these small characters aren’t able to snipe and be impossible to hit from a distance.

  • @Pheesley ^,
I've personally never thought that just decreasing the amount of hp acorn gets with hardened would fix it, even 100hp on a character with an already fairly small hitbox is very annoying, plus hardened encouraging a moreso support playstyle would be an interesting concept imo.
  • @SockReverie Acorn and imp aren’t the issues in this game. Peashooters and chompers are the REAL issues, sunflowers using that upgrade the links to multiple plants including herself and electric slide are the lesser issues.

Acorn is fine as he is and so is imp. Bunny hopping peashooters slapping you for 34 damage each hit while also having an upgrade that has homing shots, and chompers instantly killing you even when more often than not you teleport or use something that would’ve taken you far enough away or something that makes you immune to everything yet the chomper still gets you are the issues that needs to be addressed.

These issues have been a major issue since GW 1 and yet 2 games later it’s STILL a thing but somehow it’s even worse than before. I rarely see imps or acorns but every single match there’s 100000 peashooters everywhere with undying sunflowers and a small group of chompers. I have never gotten annoyed by a imp or acorn. Peashooters, sunflowers, chompers? They’re the reason I can’t play this game for long. Having multiple peashooters in a match almost guarantees a win. You just can’t do anything when there’s a group of pea shooters hitting literally everything for 34 damage each hit while also having about 3 peashooters in different areas of the map all in pea gatling. Then when you actually catch one, they spam bunny hop and kill you. Pea shooter needs a big big nerf. Sunflower needs the Blossom upgrade removed or the length extremely shortened. Scientists doesn’t have anything near as good as the blossom upgrade. No zombie has an instant guaranteed kill. Peashooter, sunflower and chomper needs the be nerfed for sure.
  • @Zedioo "Chomper instantly kills me so hes op"
Unless you're high pings, (which even then I am and I only get burrowed once in a blue moon) then you shouldn't have much trouble as everyone has a safe way too get out of the chompers range (ala sprinting) plus chomper is already far from the best character in the game with his relatively slow speed for a brawler and jank hit detection so I would say he doesn't at all need a nerf.

@The4DAdvocate Chomper has audio glitches, it’s been like that since day 1. More often than not you don’t hear the chomper or anything. I didn’t say chomper was op, I said he was annoying. If there was a 100% way to tell when a chomper is coming it wouldn’t be so annoying, but glitches make it so you don’t see or hear the chomper in most cases.

Since the beginning of GW1 people hated the fact that chomper had an instant kill ability that never worked correctly. It’s no different in BFN. Chomper should’ve been removed and torch wood should’ve taken its place.
  • @Zedioo "I didn't say chomper was op"
Let's see who you wanted to be nerfed.
"Peashooter, sunflower and chomper needs the be nerfed for sure".
Also many people dislike chomper much less in BFN because the assassination mechanic (even though I thought it should've been scrapped) isn't the main thing about chomper.

@The4DAdvocate Saying something needs to be nerfed doesn’t mean it’s op. I’d say he’s worse in BFN. Not only are the chomper eating you from miles away still a thing but now with the added visual and audio bugs it makes detecting one impossible when the bugs kick in.
  • @ZediooWhat platform do you play on, and is there a specific game mode that you see  his glitch.

Because ive never seen this, maybe if I think hard enough I could recall an instance or two that seemed weird to me. But more often than not, there is no glitch and I also have played since day 1. Actually the greater majority of the time the chomper seems fine. This audio glitch is very much a rarity.

I think I have to agree with the "chomper needs a buff" crowd

    Edit: phone

If the melee hit registration was working better it would go a long way towards making Chomper and Super Brainz more useful Even with that, I feel that spikeweed is not much of a thing these days. It was good in GW1, a bit too good in GW2 (the instant arming vs. time to grow difference), and weak in BfN.
