Unfortunately it appears that the time for new game play, new characters and new modes and maps has passed.
PopCap has confirmed that Frontline Fighters was the final major content update for Garden Warfare 2 so the future only holds variations on the existing Mystery Portal special events and possible balancing adjustments.
See, everyone keeps saying that, but I think they'd rather add better new additions than create a completely new game only a little after a year of the release of this one.
People keep saying that PopCap announced that Frontline Fighters was the last major content update because that's actually what PopCap actually stated in their News release for the Luck O' The Zombie event; http://www.pvzgw2.com/news/luck-o-the-zombie right under the "The Grass Still Grows" header.
I'm sure everyone involved understands that some players would love to see development of the game continue forever but the fact is that they've released everything that they wanted to release for PvZGW2 so while the game definitely is not in it's twilight it's definitely leveled off into a plateau..
With any luck in a couple of years we'll see a Garden Warfare 3 and be treated to whatever new ideas might accompany such a sequel.
