The old characters feeling "old" is not a strange complaint. And I feel the same way. They didn't bring them into GW2 with the love and care that they deserved. Instead we got all the new variants outclassing them in just about every way. Official critics have said the same thing. This is what IGN said in their review of the game:
"Feeling Wilted
Then there’s the original set of four characters on each side, but they’ve been in short supply in online matches thus far for good reason; short of the healer class, there’s little beckoning a return to Garden Warfare’s founders when the new classes have so many more interesting things to do."
And it's a negative bullet point in their final assessment of pros and cons for the final review score. It's actually the truth. There may be a few excepts like maybe the Fire Chomper, but the new definitely trumps the old, making for a very short list of desirable characters to play as. I hope in time they'll figure this out to be true and work to bring them back to their past glory.
