This makes things look even worse than we thought then. Was it doomed from day one? Had they already planned for it to have just one year of festivals and only gave us content that was already mostly done? A couple years work went into it, and a lot of the team did come from GW2 (some go back to GW1 like Justin), and to have them release a PvZ shooter with so little promotion and in such a bad state at launch, and then leaving for this Skate game has very bad optics. Why they'd bail on a successful IP like PvZ for something like Skate is a head scratcher. It was big in its day, but the skate culture was much larger back in the 80s and 90s, not so much today.

@Iron_Guard8 I think, like @benn1nat0r said, that the BFN cancellation stuff happened around June, when Skate was revealed. Some BFN devs probably knew before that time, that they'd be the ones making it. They kept making new content though (leaked legendary upgrades). But because BFN didn't do too well, by June it was probably decided that September would be the last content update, which is why after June we stopped getting new leaked content (besides stuff like Super Bean and Wildflower).
