Boss discussion: Spooky squash

Spooky Squash

Bfn description: THE BEAST FROM THE AUTUMNAL FEAST! Used to be "Up to no Gourd".

An orange squash with a carved out face with a candle inside to make him look like a jack o lantern.

The main boss of the tale of the spooky squash.

From October 26, 2016 to October 29, 2016, and later returned on April 27, 2017 to April 30, 2017, August 31, 2017 to September 3, 2017 and November 5, 2019 to November 11, 2019.

Gw2: Zombies must lure him out with candy at the aqua center. He mainly just hops around the map with no real destination in mind shike attacking the zombies with fire balls and fire breath.

He appears to be invincible but this is actually not true. He simply has a obscenely latgr amount of health to where you barely do damage to him but yes your weapons do work so take potshots at him when you can.

Zombies must have two members stand in circles around tombstones on the top of the aqua center. This will summon the guardian, a champion Giga Torchwood, if zombies leave and don't immediately come back than the anchor will be broken and they must start again from scratch.

They will than have to give one zombie the hungry bucket. They must beat up champion heroes for candy. If they do not feed it candy they will all be wiped out by the curse of all hallows eve. ONLY the zombie with the bucket must eat the candy otherwise its power will be lost.

All zombies no matter where they are are given a sugar rush which buffs their damage immensely (about 50 times) allowing them to now significantly damage spooky squash. Repeat until victory. Awards 15 rainbow stars and gives a halloween cosmetic for scientist.

Powers

Fire Spit: Shoots a fire ball that does splash and fire damage. It's a range attack.

Fire Breath: Spooky Squash breaths fire at a close distance doing fire damage. Similar to Giga Torchwood's Volcano Breath.

Spooky Slam: Spooky Squash slams the floor causing damage and stunning zombies.

Health gw2 only

875000 health (Normal)

775000 health (Hard)

675000 health (CRAAAAZY!!!)

Yes he actually gets weaker on higher difficulties.

Bfn: called pumpkin squash now. Health was tuned to make him a normal boss. Otherwise his powers are the same. His elite wave requires you to beat up a yellow chomper champion who constantly runs away and then take the seed to the soup. One zombie must drink it and produces a radius damage boost every zombie must be in to benefit from the effect.

Honestly I have fond memories of his bosshunt in gw2 due to not having xbox live at the time it came out with a free trial timeframe (big brain move tbh). However, it's still really frustrating and the lack of communication really hurts the tombstone and bucket sections easily making it the second hardest boss hunt right behind yeti king. Many modders have reused this hunt for custom ones and have honestly made it much better with solo play features by removing the function of having to stay in the tombstones radius and switching to a bot before death prevents the teamwipe. Man I want boss hunts back. Was it really that hard for steve to just be programmed to play this guy at halloween?

His Bfn version is really lackluster. He really doesn't bring much to the table as Torchwood is the far more engaging fire boss with more moves and the elite wave isn't difficult just tedious as your the same thing over and over with no serious threat of failure and the chomper champions don't even fight back.

According to the loading screen before starting the Boss Hunt, the Spooky Squash exists because Crazy Dave put candy in the soil under the giant doom moon.

I also appreciate how the last two plant bosses in the game to fight as zombies are hybrids.

  • I still remember the first time my friend and I (me as Toxic Brainz and him as Astronaut) almost had this done on Ccccrraaazzzyyy!!!! difficulty and on what would have almost certainly been the last candy run to finish it, the foot soldier got impatient as I didn't grab it right away since I was in bad health and my friend was healing me up, and he almost immediately got wrecked and we lost. Had to go back with a new time and try again to beat this one eventually. I wanted to shout; "I'm waiting to avoid exactly what just happened!" We finally won it on crazy with us both being astronauts and both using the mega heal ball, teamed with a random party imp and random toxic brainz.

Fun fact; if you take the mega heal ball as a scientist and you are one of the grave anchors for the champion, you can run just out of your circle to get the ball momentum to heal the other anchor! As long as you get back in quickly, you won't lose the anchor, but you gotta be fast! I've mentioned this before, but it's one of those tactics that really helps out.

Great boss hunt even if it's super difficult once that difficultly slider is moved past normal. If the wrong person grabs the candy, it's really bad. That wasn't explained well at first, and caused a lot of issues when the fight was new, or newer players experienced the fight. When he wanders up top where the anchors are with his healing friends, it can easily vanquish an anchor holder so having at least one of them being a scientist really helps.

I'm glad it's still here in BfN. My biggest complaint about the elite boss version is that the Chomper runs away all the time, so you waste a lot of time trying to take it out which reminds me of the yeti boss hunt in GW2, in a bad way, as having to chase down the yeti king when you finally have that buff could see you losing a LOT of damage you need. This guy and the yeti king are far and away the most difficult elite bosses in BfN Ops.

I have all these hats but so many folks don't, especially newer people, so they really should bring these back. Boss hunts are a nice challenge and you can always turn it down to practice if you find crazy to be hard to beat, and it is!

@Iron_Guard8 Yeah the candy section was the worst part as it's very poorly explained that only the bucket holder can eat it.

Boy I sure do love getting paired with three imps or deadbeards who just installed the game. Atleast the zmechs can shred squash during the sugar rush sections which is the only thing keeping imps from easily being the worst class in boss hunt.

They really need to bring boss hunt back. For all its flaws it was one of the best modes in gw2 as it was nice to actually have a very difficult mode for veterans of the series.
