I think the game has to quickly process that you died and transition you to "who got you" screen. So to help alleviate it, the game might not load for your character as many SFX as it needs. Then again this is just speculation.
A good explanation, but bit of a pain that one's ability as a corn is nerfed inadvertently because of a quirk in programming (if that is the reason?)
