What is this?
I'm finding very little to be useful here. There are no actual "Defense Units" or such. That's all fluff and suggestions to noobs.
Acorns - Mid to Long range
Flank and skirmish. Use Sap Traps under Space Stations to evade shields. Jump onto Oaks to heal them, but don't hang out there; Electric Slides or other AE will melt the group. Try to go Oak close to the fighting as you're too easy to hit lumbering your way there. Acorns are generally better than Oaks. Nutty Feedback and Hardened are META for Acorns. Speedy affects Oak base speed.
Space Cadet - Mid range
Your Station activates very quickly, has no cool down while making you invulnerable during activation, and better serves to melt anyone that gets too close. The homing on cosmo shot will track invisible Night Caps, turning red and everything. Meteor smash counters burrowing Chompers, but it's AoE is rather small; it makes for a decent escape power. If used as an opener, don't miss as you will likely die to those it doesn't kill. A fully loaded Space Station is god-like, especially if you've got players aware enough to rotate who is the base Station. Don't hang out in an unshielded Station. Unless you're got riders to shield you, or are against unaware noobs, crater maker will get you killed if you rely on it. My understanding is that a Kernel Corn with Hopscotch, used point-blank to land on someone, is the most damaging attack in the game; it's just much more difficult to pull off. Speedy affects Station base speed, crater maker, and meteor smash. Feedback loop is near META. Bullseye telegraphs your shot, causing misses.
