stukapooka I think the reason why the Boss Hunts in GW2 are so popular, and in particular The King's Day Out (The Yeti King) and Spooky Squash, is because they require, amongst the many character choices available, choosing the correct character, as it plays a defining role in the success or failure of the Hunt. In addition, the individual skill of each player and how well the players function as a team with and without verbal instructions is paramount to success in the Hunt.
It requires an intimate knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of each character in the game and of the maps where the Hunts are played out.
Therefore in my experience, it is only the most able and experienced players who are able to complete all the Hunts at all levels from Normal mode to Crazy mode with success.
It is that challenge of reaching that level of competency that makes the Hunts so rewarding.
@ManicMossieYep. The character matchups were always interesting because a team will never have everything they need. Have two sunflowers well there goes the tankiness of torchwood and citron plus the dps of a corn or peashooter.
Imp is one of the weaker zombies but his mech is great in fights and can turn the tide of battle if used well.
Rose can make harder enemies easier ti deal with but that low health will need supporting.
Chomper struggles with range a lot but he can easily remove enemies that are greatly harming your team and slow down the enemy horde. A good count chompula can practically thrive dealing with the reinforcements while you do objectives.
Throw in the variants and you have an even better discussion of who will be better in certain situations such as toxic brainz great damage when boosted or party brainz better consistenty when things go south. Vampire flowers survivability or stuffy flowers team healing.
Boss hunt is where the team aspect really shines.

stukapooka For my part, and looking first of all purely at the Yeti King Boss Hunt, it all depends on what level one I would want to tackle him. Using a Chomper on Normal level is possible, but extremely difficult even when supported by two Sunflowers and a Corn, but (for me) when on Hard and Crazy it's impossible.
The reason is of course that this class (apart from the Yeti Chomper) is exclusively Melee and borderline Close Range, and since the Yeti Boss has the ability to instantly freeze characters within Close Range, and the Yeti King's supporting characters all inflict ice damage at both long, medium and close range with the associated movement penalty the Chomper class is just not suited at these higher levels for this Boss Hunt.
The same inability to contribute at the higher levels of this particular Boss Hunt also goes for the Cactus, as it is first and foremost longe range and has a slower rate of fire. Again, I have tried it at Normal level, and I made it after umpteen attempts, but I would never recommend the character as viable for this Hunt
Secondly, with regard to the Spooky Squash Boss Hunt, the low standard Health of the Imp means that only really skilled players would survive. This means that you rarely if ever get the chance to make use of the Z-Mech associated with each Imp. The Mech is extremely powerful, and I have used it on Normal; but again at the higher levels, I get slaughtered after one or two rounds before I can make use of it.
I have seen Imp being used on the higher levels, but you have got to be exceptionally skilled to stay alive among the hordes of Plants that try to overrun you.
Another character that is enticing to use is Captain Deadbeard. They have of course a wide damage spread at melée range, but they are forced to use Zoom at Close Range, Medium, and Long Range. This can be a distraction, as you become less aware of your surroundings. I have tried him myself, but I would say that only particularly skilled players should contemplate using him.
I nearly forgot to say this, but the Parrot Pal ability is largely useless, as it is not possible during these Hunts to find a safe area, where you can use it undisturbed.
