GW and BfN appeal to me because they are quite cartoony. I have played grittier, more realistic shooters but they're usually so boring with that realistic aesthetic that I don't play them long.
It doesn't work for me in every game though, WoW has always looked horrendous to me (part of why I'm not playing 'classic'), City of Heroes had a look more akin to comic books and amazing animations though.
The current Halloween decorations are brilliant too.
I played the Unreal series until they went PC only and think that game was the best shooter in history.
Graphics, no balance issues, etc.... love the Epic engine and wish the PvZ environment was slightly more in tune with this type of design.
Still love PvZ... it’s just a step down from a highly-competitive design (we lose opponents, crosshairs, etc, in PvZ).
Unreal is fantastic. I recently played through it again and the not quite as good expansion but it was stylized and very alien which really helped. It was gorgeous for the day.
I'm talking single player campaign in the original game here, it was huge and the alien settings were amazing. Then I got Unreal 2 and it was even better looking, but as a game...it was terrible.

Never played the tournament stuff. Actually I did once at a LAN party but at that time I was focused on BF:1942 which I really liked as I love WW2 games and it was a great time.
