An update from the developers:
Yup, still got the error. I started playing back in April and still had the .ipa file (the iOS equivalent of the apk) on my PC. Even that one, with the old loading screen, gets the connection error instead of "Please update". There's a good reason why I'm still thinking it's a server-side issue (or they changed something in their servers and forgot to update the code and, bonus if it's the code update that makes the game work on iOS 11 that broke everyone else's game): these versions worked just fine and connected to the servers without issue. Only since 2 weeks ago can no old version or newly downloaded version of the app connect to the servers.

Oh, and boy do I wish I had version 1.22.12 for Apple just to check it out. But... the newest iTunes update removed the possibility of downloading the .ipa files on computers.
Yep.. Downloaded the latest version but it still doesnt work. By the way Im pretty sure there is a problem with the EA servers. Since I own an Android device I managed to find a website with all of the older versions of PvZ Heroes. I tryed (downloaded) all of them but all of them had the connecitone error so I dont think there is problem with the latest version of the game.. I think its a problem of the EA servers..
