A quick addition to my last comment-
I was able to complete a full game of Turf Takeover using the new upgrade and the experience has confirmed for me that the shield provided to Corn by the upgrade is essentially useless outside of PvE.
Under competitive circumstances against other actual players the shield crumples almost immediately when subjected to direct fire, however because the shield covers only the upper portion of the character most players have already adopted the tactic of firing at the lower half of the character which is not covered by the shield.
Based on my evaluation the Upgrade is not worth the five (5) Upgrade points which it costs to equip because the main motivation to place it into your loadout is to gain access to the shield. Because the shield, in it's current iteration, does not provide the expected level of protection and because Corn's DPS is not significantly changed by the alteration of his primary fire I think the cost is too high.
Yes, you can shoot through the shield but at the same time an opposing player can shoot you by aiming under the shield. I also understand that the shield is functionally weaker than those provided to either Citron or Super Brainz because neither of those characters retain the ability to fire while using their shields but I think it's too weak- especially when compared to the All-Star Dummy Shield which is much stronger, which protects from all directions, and which allows multiple characters to stand within and fire.
I think that I'll be reverting to my standard loadout for Kernal Corn for now and reserve this "Legendary Upgrade" for another try when, and if, they adjust the mechanics.
I'm almost done with this month's map and barring incident I'll be getting the upgrade tonight as the character challenge resets. Looking forward to trying it out. It's looking like it's not OP and is more of a preference thing which is nice to see as it appears to be the way forward for variants and since GW1 we've had a lot of issues with variants being too good or too weak.

Got it last night after finishing the Acorn challenges. I didn't play with it much but it's a nice way to introduce variants as it can made to cost variable upgrade points based on their effectiveness. The shield didn't seem to help a lot against AI in Mount Steep but at least since it covers the head it can protect against crits. Looking forward to more of these upgrades in future.
