My collection:

Plants - 11 heroes and 999 cards

Zombies - 11 heroes and 1006 cards

I have all decks completed and just missing a couple of legendary card , those which are not required to build a  strategic decks

That is impressive. I only have 860 plants and 776 zombies.

Is it possible to get that many cards without buying gems?

Sure you can recycle event cards and use the sparks to get the cards you need. I completed the event cards collection a year ago , so  each week you I am normally getting 1000 sparks  and for some rare event cards 4000 sparks a week.

I have now all plant cards total 1004, so your number was little wrong, and 1005 zombie cards, but I’m missing some more zombie cards yet.
