How Many Stars Does It Take to Level Up With That Fish?

I was under the impression, that you would get one level for each visit you paid him. However, when I tried him out, my XP barely increased. It seems like it would take an exorbitant amount of stars to do even one level with him. So does anyone know how many you need exactly?

LOL...Some of the game tips when loading the game I think say never trust a fish with your stars...Yeah but really, I was mad when I gave him my stars because I did it by accident ☹️
