I think the idea of the drone was to give swarmers something to do while they wait for other swarmers to arrive but I do agree with the ability being unfitting for their purpose for the reasons you've said.
With the respawn point I do think it helps them keep together as a group by respawning them closer to the others even outside of TT but I would like to see it have another purpose and I was thinking while playing today about them being used as teleports
I actually never though about using their drones like that before. I never considered it being a thing to use while waiting for your team. If that is true though, then even that feels a slightly flawed from sprinting and how fast players respawn. Never the less, thanks for your input! I actually learned something from your comment!
