Infinity mode as a testament to the overall bad design and game mechanics in gw2

the main actual play style core for infinity mode is the suicide at the chosen shard point.

you play the game mode to have a chance at the infinity items from the chest

you can get an item at a shard count as low as 2500.

there is no reason to keep playing at that point if you are just trying to get the missing stickerbook items.

everyone i know plays it and suicides once they have the right shard count this in itself shows how bad this game mode is as for design.

popcap preferred to make it a time sink and a star sink on the expense of actually having it be a good enjoyable game mode.

they could make you receive multiple stickerbook items the higher you go making suicide irrelevant.

in anyway the design behind this game mode should have been one that places you as the player in a position you would want to do your very best on each run.

if only the reward would justify the effort.

but they choose to give a single item at the end of the run no matter how far you go worse then that you can get a coin reward even after playing for a full hour.

and do not forget the disconnections i get them 20% of the time. just now i disconnected 5 seconds into the intro after paying 5 stars.

there are about 100+ infinity items you need to play around 10 minutes to reach 2500+ shards to have a chance at an infinity item.

overall it will take you 17 hours of playtime if you would get 1 item each run. but the reality is you get coins and disconnections. so the actual figure would me 40+ hours on this game mode.

each time committing suicide when reaching 2500+ shards.

this game mode comes to reflect on the entire theme of this game bad design decisions going more into various methods of grind rather then providing an enjoyable experience you want to play.

popcap thinks the player will need to go online more often to complete daily quests for stars so he could attempt more infinity runs.

same thing goes for the fish XP it is a real joke how low of an amount you get for 5 stars 750 XP

another unrewarding game mechanics focused around grind in an attempt to make players play more daily quests.

infinity should not give you coin rewards after a certain shard amount.

the reward should keep scaling the higher wave you go getting multiple items so you wont want to suicide each run.

fish XP should also give more xp to  the point its actually not a cruel joke. so people will actually want to complete daily star quests.

if you look at the leaderboard on completed quests only about 500 players even have completed more then 250 quests while the top ones completed 500.

out of the entire playerbase those are weak stats. if the XP fish would give more xp more people would do daily quests.

they also limit your global star amount to 200 so you will have to keep logging in daily and be forced to spend the stars on the fish and or just leave you in a position you have no reason to play daily quests.

  • I consider the xp fish to be...Well a star dump if you have nothing else to spend star at. But yeah,it kinda dumb that the main way to play infinity mode effectively is to just suicide once you got enough shard wtih disconnect and the occasional crash not helping neither.

yes you have said that before but let me ask you this why make a "star dump" anyway why not make something you will enjoy spending your stars on instead of feeling you are throwing them to the trash with the xp fish.

thats my point design philosophy behind this game is too much towards grind star dumps that are unsatisfying and are not enjoyable

they thought it would work in their favor. but they went too far not enough people are playing into that game. daliy quests are not worth doing if you are doing them for fish XP

and they are not really worth doing for infinity runs either because the low reward chance and the 200+ runs needed to get all the infinity items

  • @YT-mantisisrael  Do you have plant infinity item numbers IT6, IT11, IT24, IT29, and IT58? I think they're bugged like Party Rose, which makes them unobtainable.

You are saying that there are 100+ Infinity items AND that it is not worth doing. And you described the fish as the star dump, when Infinity Time, with its 100+ items, also needs stars to be run. Something sounds off here.

Perhaps someone should make a topic for people looking for serious, non-suicide Infinity runs, to make serious players happy.

There's no such thing as a non suicidal run in this trash mode. It doesn't matter if it's 2500 or 25000 Shards, it's so badly designed that once you reach those numbers suicide is your best option to give you your reward.

I have all the Party characters and none of it was enjoyable to grind. It's just a tedious mode in general. You have no incentive to skip to a higher waves and the Shard gain really need to be increased. So people don't have to endure so much boredom. Infinity time isn't hard, it's just so damn boring.

Agreed with the fish as well, he should be buffed to at least 1000 exp.

@YT-mantisisrael Good to know about accessories being able to be achieved at 2500 shards minimum, I have always been curious about that so cheers.

    Well said man!

I am not at the infinity grind yet, however from all i have heard ( and my own experiences of infinity ) i fear the day that I have to go theough this.

Infinity should give players a good reward every time... Not money.

you can get items but i am not sure maybe only some of them.

the scrumptious "rare" ones are given from 2500 shard "good" chests

but i think maybe the metrix looking ones need a better chest maybe the 7500 one

7500 shards mean wave 11~ and takes like 10-12 minutes

2500 shards can be done in like 7 minutes

today we did like 7 runs i got 6 scrumptious items in a row

but my buddy got nothing half the runs more then half even

we were four players it looked like 50/50 chance of getting coins after 7 10 minute infinity runs with suicide at 2500 or 7500

and we all had 90% of the items left to get

maybe once you only have few left it even gets harder who knows

its enough grind as it is needing 200~ runs

they should either keep the current format and ditch the coin reward so you know you will only need around 100 runs no more

that in itself is quite the feat

or they could change the format so you get multiple rewards the higher you go and still keep the coin reward.

imagine opening a chest at 50k shards and your screen gets filled with reward cards now that will make me want to play as best as i can every run.

seeing you get multiple rewards some of them could still be coins.

but if its a single reward no matter the shard count they should ditch the coin reward altogether

Edit" hell if they were not lazy they could make special packs "infinity packs" that would contain a number of customization items and that pack would transport and wait for you in the machine on your yard so after each infinity chest you would have it waiting for you.

you could have a pack corresponding to each chest rank in infinity "good chest pack" "infinity chest pack"  and so on

each would have a chance of rare super rare stuff inside

but each would contain a few items

lets say good chest packs would contain 2-3 items

and the twiddle packs would contain 4 with rare and a chance to super rare

and infinity chest would contain 5 items with a chance of a legendary variant piece

It does get harder to get once you have 15 left on either side, to get the last few you have to get to 15-25k for higher chance of getting them, unless you have hundreds of stars to throw in for small chance of getting them at 2.5-7.5k.

I have been a long time critic of infinity mode probably since day 1. I dont really think about it nowadays (never play it) and rarely comment on infinity mode threads because I cant really see PopCap doing anything about it. They seem to love it. The premise of this game's design is to keep people playing as long as possible - whatever the cost. The coins, stars, party characters, legendary characters, levelling system, even the fish - you name it, its all been designed to suck up your time up and keep you playing. There is nothing inherently wrong with that, providing the game play is engaging. Unfortunately in infinity mode case, its anyhting but engaging. Personally I think they should scrap the mode entirely, but they wont because that would be admitting defeat. Progressing and acquiring characters and items in this game could be done a million ways better, it could all be inter connected and contributing to your all over game progression (not to mention enjoymment). But it never will be. I like the game but there are just some elements where the design is just incredibly lazy and short sighted. Here endith the lesson.
