I tested this out myself and got the same error. I did some digging and from what I gathered yesterday it appears the error is happening due to basically not enough players online playing. The volume is so low its just not matching anyone.
I called it out in my talks with some people and they will take a look but even with my set up I got the error because there wasn't anyone to match with when I tried. If I get info I will let you know but for now, it does not seem to be a game error but an error due to lack of volume in the game itself.

Community Manager@Jeffster111 That is why i reached out. When I looked it was so low I couldn't get a match even with no errors. So players may be in game but when I looked it was so low that the system didn't match me up here either. I am still looking though but we also have to keep in mind that with the age of the game, it may be something that isn't looked at immediately either.
I was able to get multiple full games, I have screenshots and videos I took on my Xbox, two days ago. After EA was having server issues, that is when the matchmaking error started. It sometimes told me to update the game to access online features, even though there has not been an update for years.
