I'm six from full and have yet to open the 30 star chest. I'm very much hoping this will be the last mystery portal I need to participate in.

I started getting consumables from the chests after I collected every customization item released in the Trials Of Gnomus DLC. The collection was completed this year, in the first mystery portal event to use the new availability schedule. Up to this point, I had not missed a single chest ever since the DLC was released.
The chests nowadays aren't a necessary waste of time; the consumables in them are super rare, which means the hard-to-earn consumables are more easier to get. This beats wasting so many coins in the stickershop. 🙂
