Today, I start PVZ and open my characters. I see many characters become ??? which I already own. It seems to return to a few weeks ago.

You had all the characters because it was the Anniversary event, where all non-progression characters were unlocked for all players. This event has now ended and your account has reverted back to what it had before the event started.

But I get most of characters through packs. What about the coins I earned? Will it return?
It only took away what you didn't already own. During the event character unlocks were not available, so they were not purchaseable.
Are you missing characters that you had before the event started?

The anniversary event was applied to all platforms of Garden Warfare, from Feb 25th or March 5th, players were unfortunately unable to unlock characters, as they were given them all.
My sons have exactly the same situation but it's not related to any Anniversary Packs. We spent a lot of money buying packs + spectacular packs and now we realized that around 80% of characters are missing!
If this is not fixed for me I'm going to call EA support. If they will not help then I request a refund as this is unacceptable!

Nothing but absolutly nothing was received like compensation.
