Mount Steep - Elusive Foes Guide!

Hi ya everyone,

On this thread that I have created here, I will be providing information on finding the Elusive Foes in Mount Steep. I will include information such as what Elusive Foes are, what they look like, and how to defeat them, along with pictures I collected myself and other information about them.

What are Elusive Foes?

Elusive Foes are somewhat rare enemies located around every free-roam region. Each free-roam region has a total of exactly 3 Elusive Foes. They are normally found in particular locations or under specific circumstances, and they reward you if you defeat them. To complete your Mount Steep region fully, you must defeat each Elusive Foe once or more, as they reward you with an exclusive medal if you vanquish them - either a shared or direct vanquish counts, you do not need to worry about others taking your vanquish off of you, just deal enough damage. Elusive Foes have a special name that is displayed around their head and they have a red aura around them. Some of them have special gimmicks and all Elusive Foes are elites, which means you cannot eat them as a Chomper. Elite foes have more health than a Champion or regular hero.

Names of Elusive Foes

The names for the Elusive Foes in Mount Steep are Dig WigMag Pete-O and Safety Stan. I will provide detailed information on where to find them, such as their location and their approximate rarity to find, as well as other relevant information. I will also include my personal tips to help defeat them, and include a picture of me battling them.

THE ELUSIVE FOES

Dig Wig

Dig Wig is an Elusive Foe found in the Steep Mines. He only appears at the Big Drill in the mines of Mount Steep, and he only has a relatively low chance of appearing at that. Many other times, other regular Engineers will appear instead. If this happens, you can reload your Mount Steep and reattempt to try and get him to spawn again. If not, rinse and repeat until he spawns. He is an Engineer who is wearing the "Night Shift" costume and the "Finer Miner" set.

  • Location: Steep Mines, on the Big Drill.
  • Rarity: Rare.
  • Special Gimmicks: Turns invincible every few seconds and can still attack you.
  • Medal Received for Defeating Him: ELUSIVE FOE: Dig Wig.

My tips for having an easier time defeating him are as follows:

  • You can actually knock Dig Wig off of the Big Drill, into the cheese abyss below. If you do, you insta-vanquish him and get the medal if you have not already and your XP. For this reason, attacks and abilities that deal knockback are extremely effective against him as you can knock him off the cliff, even if he is invincible. Consider using upgrades on your characters that give them added knockback or improved knockback.
  • When he is invincible, use this time to regenerate, reload, start charging up an ability with a delay, or similar. Damaging abilities such as Pea Gatling and Sunbeam are effective against him, but save your ammo and other attacks and abilities while he is invincible.
  • You can hide around the side of the Big Drill, if you find he is overpowering you, and regenerate. If you do, keep an eye out for if he is trying to find you.
  • Try and destroy any other enemies in the area before you go for Dig Wig, it will make the fight easier.
  • Watch your step, you do not want to fall off of the Big Drill. Luckily, Dig Wig has no way of dealing knockback to you.

Mag Pete-O

Mag Pete-O is an Elusive Foe also found in the Steep Mines. To get him to appear, trigger Battle Zones to occur inside of the Steep Mines and he will have a high chance of appearing at some point. If you have completed a Battle Zone and he did not appear, keep doing Battle Zones and Skirmishes until he appears. To try and find him faster, attempt to start and complete Battle Zones faster. To do this, use characters with high mobility and/or damage, to get around and defeat enemies quicker. He is a Scientist who is wearing the "Foil Fanatic" costume and the "Magnetic Magnificence" set.

  • Location: Steep Mines (sometimes during Battle Zones).
  • Rarity: Uncommon.
  • Special Gimmicks: He makes any nearby ally zombies, excluding himself, invincible.
  • Medal Received for Defeating Him: ELUSIVE FOE: Mag Pete-O.

My tips for having an easier time defeating him are as follows:

  • Mag Pete-O will not leave the area, so you can save him until last. However, he automatically makes any nearby allies apart from himself invincible. For this reason, decide to defeat him first, or to wait until the Battle Zone is over. Your choice.
  • Because of his significant pool of health, try to use attacks and abilities that deal a lot of damage to him to guarantee a shared vanquish or to get a direct one. You will get the medal either way.
  • Try to use attacks and abilities that either have an area-of-effect or that deal splash damage to clear out some other enemies in the area that are not being made invincible with Mag Pete-O's effect, and to possibly damage Mag Pete-O himself as well.
  • Unless you are directly trying to vanquish Mag Pete-O at the time, ignore enemies that are close to him until after clearing out other enemies, otherwise they will be invincible and you will not be able to damage him. After the Battle Zone, it will be really easy to finish Mag Pete-O and the other enemies off.
  • When Mag Pete-O appears, you can switch character to better suit you to fight him. He will not despawn and this will hopefully give you an easier vanquish on him.

Safety Stan

Safety Stan is an Elusive Foe found in Rocky Flats. To get him to appear, trigger some Battle Zones to occur around Rocky Flats and he will have a small chance of appearing throughout the Battle Zone or Skirmish. If you complete a Battle Zone and he does not appear during it, you need to repeat this process until he appears. To try and find him faster, attempt to start and complete Battle Zones faster, by using characters with mobility to get around the area to defeat enemies more quickly, and/or damage to quickly vanquish random enemies you find in the area, or during Battle Zones. He is an Imp who is wearing the "Imp-Cab Express" costume.

  • Location: Rocky Flats.
  • Rarity: Legendary.
  • Medal Received for Defeating Him: ELUSIVE FOE: Safety Stan.

My tips for having an easier time defeating him are as follows:

  • Safety Stan will not leave the Battle Zone area intentionally, so for an easier defeat, finish the Battle Zone and vanquish him last. However, if you see his health bar beginning to get low due to being attacked by other plants, deal damage to him so you can still shared or direct vanquish him and get your medal.
  • Due to his high health, use attacks and abilities that deal lots of damage upon him to vanquish him faster and guarantee your shared or direct vanquish.
  • Using attacks or abilities that have an area-of-effect or that deal splash damage are useful as you can control and vanquish some of the other enemies in the area while also damaging Safety Stan, hopefully.
  • Vanquish any Scientists healing Safety Stan as soon as possible, make it your priority, as otherwise he will easily go back up to full health.
  • When he appears, switching to a character that is more suitable for you is a good idea. He will not despawn, so do not worry. Just do not take too long or there is a possibility he could wander off or get vanquished by other plants.

CONCLUSION AND REWARDS

To watch someone finding and battling all 3 of these Elusive Foes, watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iT0apmSXtA8

While some of these Elusive Foes can be quite rare to find or hard to defeat, you will gain 75 XP for each one you defeat with the character you are currently using, which is nice for levelling up with that character. For this reason, I suggest switching to a character that you want to level up when an Elusive Foe appears to gain XP for that particular character. Also, the first time you defeat each Elusive Foe, you will get a special medal, not obtainable in any other way, so defeating every Elusive Foe once or more are required to fully complete Mount Steep and collect all of the medals and 100% the region. If you learn the Elusive Foe's (potential) gimmicks) and can work around them, you will be rewarded with a medal (first time only) and XP for your efforts. Because some of the Elusive Foes can be a bit tedious to find, you may want to get a friend to join you and help you find these foes. If you do, you and your friends can each get the medal if they have not already obtained it, from each of you contributing enough damage to get a shared vanquish upon that Elusive Foe (which should be relatively easy due to their significantly increased health). Elusive Foes wear exclusive costumes and have special auras that a really limited amount of other characters have in PvE, so they should be really easy to spot. Just make sure that when you are in the right area or under the right conditions, that you keep a lookout for them and their auras.

Well, I hope that this guide was quite helpful, and I will see you again soon!

Cya lay-ter!
