It's not that odd that gw2 has less active playerbase considering the price tag of gw2. Gw2 made the mistake of being sold as a full price game which made the first one so approachable.
In all honesty GW2 is less approachable than its predecessor for many reasons.
I recently took a gamertag ban (family sharing violation) and had to suffer the indignity of starting my achievements all over again - which in a lot of respects isn't really a bad thing because I can now dig out my old games and actually play them with a new sense of purpose. The weird thing is, on restarting GW1 I have had no issues whatsoever accumulating all those achievements again and if the truth be told i'm probably enjoying the whole experience as much as the first time around. On the other hand, although I've long since sold my copy of GW2 I do have an EA Access subscription with the option to install and revisit the game but I have absolutely no desire to want to do so.
So for me personally price point is not really a telling factor - my decision is influenced purely on previous experience of the game.
