son got PvZ download for Christmas. We are a Mac family, We did not realize this was a Windows only game. Does any one know if this will work on a windows based tablet? if so, Any suggestions on a tablet that we could get him?

Windows 7/8/10 64bit tablets. Windows RT will not work.
Now the problem comes in with a GPU. Tablets don't generally have strong GPUs. They mostly will have integrated Intel Graphics which will not work very well.
Razer made/makes a "gaming" tablet with a GPU but even that has pretty low end specs.
You would probably be better off bootcamping Windows on your best Mac that has a dedicated GPU. Some iMacs have very impressive GPUs while others just have integrated Intels.
This game requires a bit of muscle to play smoothly since it is based on Battlefield 4's engine.
