There are parental control options on xbox you can use to prevent voice communications. If you set them up your son wont be able to hear anyone speak and vice versa.

Dont now about pc version although if there is i would assume that would be online only as well.

Oh,grow up! Online is the next gen,not now. Just click mute on every ******* you find and press the delete button if some annoying ******* tries to send your child a pvt msg! IT'S THAT SIMPLE!

The game was always advertised as an online game.  Also I believe it is rated 10+.  Honestly I mute everyone, so you could also do this.  In order to play online you must have a gold account, it has nothing to do with money.  This game did not come with a campagn mode as you can see
