The only thing I really agree with is that Lane effect cards should be considered tricks. That way zombies can make them harder to put out by way of def end, and plants like sportacus and black eyed bean can react and make zombies think twice.
The rest of the cards can seen strong if you don't have a counter, but every single hero has cards that can be exceptionally strong given the right situation, or against decks that haven't built in a counter.

How do so many players think zombies have such a distinct advantage?
When I was just starting out in this game I was pretty much balanced in cards and tried to have both plants and zombies with some decent decks. Adter a few weeks of trying to get a game(as a plant hero) on multiplayer, I decided to make a change and concentrated on zombies. And I have no issue any longer to join in a multiplayer game...but I have seen some crazy stuff that people who have a little bit of creativity come up with both as themed decks or ridiculous combos.
One thing I have not yet noticed is difficulty getting games...until I have a gem quest and try playing as a plant.
Now I don't believe for a second that these majority are playing plants because zombies have the advantage and they want a challenge. Say that out loud and I'm pretty sure you have a good laugh.
For all the pineclone/grotto or cliqueys aren't still playing those decks for the challenge, it's because they feel they have a really good chance of winning. And that doesn't make sense to me if zombies are so much better.
Keep in mind that even though I have biases and I don't think some plants are balanced... I don't think that either side has a huge advantage over the other. That would make no sense for the devs to do because they are trying to make a great game not just something to make coin. Obviously that's part of it but having a great game helps in the money depot
