You’re correct that you no longer have to cancel the opposing teams ownership of an objective before starting to capture it for your team but you also don’t capture immediately; the zone will immediately change color to show that it’s being captured but you need to stay in it until the capture is complete.
the GW2 mechanic did make for more drawn out battles- it seems that a lot of modes and mechanics in BfN were simplified or made easier in order to chase the casual gamer market and lower the skill requirement.
I, and many other PvZ vets, were disappointed in the new direction and focus.
