PvZ causing fairly high end CPU and GPU to overheat

I am using a fairly high end PC with an intel i7-3770k CPU @4.0ghz, 16gb ram, an intel SSD, and a Nvidia GTX 660.  The game seems to run smoothly, but causes both the CPU and GPU to overheat after about 5 minutes of play time or less on ANY settings as long as the game is in full screen.

When I run it in windowed mode, low-med settings it does not overheat. I can play every other new/modern game on high settings at cool temperatures. I seriously doubt my pc's specs aren't adequate to play the game in full screen mode. Any help would be appreciated.

Software cannot make your CPU or GPU overheat unless it has inadequate cooling.  I promise you.

No game I have ever tested has came close to what Prime or Heaven can do to your CPU and GPU.

Why do you think it's overheating?  What are the temps?

I'm an overclocker and I push my systems hard.  If they can't run Prime/OCCT steady for hours.. then it isn't a good OC in my book.

Does the 3770k have a stock cooler and your OCing?

Your GTX 660 can go all the way to 97c... you don't want that but it can do it safely.  If it's running 70-80c your fine.  If you put it in a benchmark like Heaven and it hit 90c or a little above your still good, no game will ever torture it like a benchmark will.

Your 3770k... actually has about the same ranges.  If that's overheating at 4ghz, I would highly suggest starting from scratch because your voltages are wrong for 4ghz, that's fairly mild I believe for that chip.

I'm no fan of nVidia or AMD's stock fan profiles.  I use Afterburner and I make them ramp up way faster.

I have two of nearly the hottest cards on the planet and I OC the snot out of them and still get better temps than what the default fan profile would do at stock clocks on a benchmark.  Yes it sounds like a jet engine lol

I always have an auxiliary monitor with graphs of GPU/ CPU usages and their temps.

** With the second poster now I'm curious... I'm going to go play a round or two and watch my temps like a hawk.

  • I have an I5 3570K  4.2OC (Aftermarket cooling) and a GTX 660ti and im having the same issue, the fans go sky high in noise and the temps look really high, like if i was running the game twice. I can play BF4, Titanfall, Watchdogs with max settings and the fans dont make too much noise, but with this game i found the same issue as you, i thought i was the only one!

Played a full round.  Temps quickly reached their peaks and never showed signs of climbing.

Made sure SLI was disabled so the top card (the one that has reduced air flow because of sli) was working it's butt off.

GPU temp 77~81c    that's incredibly cool for these GPUs... I can make them hit 100c easy with a benchmark

CPU, core sensors, highest core reports 67c... again insanely cool compared to what a bench does.

Those are my findings.  The game was on Ultra and had a fps limit of 60... if that was taken off temps of the GPU would surely climb.

    SLI 480's  1063mV  800/1600/2000

    i7 920 @ 4Ghz

Ran quite a bit cooler than BF4.  With the same fan profile, BF4 can make them roar... this game with SLI disabled and Ultra... something isn't adding up.

I'm not sure what is happening for you guys but I'd like to get to the bottom of it...  It will require some work on your end testing what your temps are in another game, in a benchmark and in this game.  Your load % would be interesting too.  I can imagine it probably is pushing a single 660 fairly pretty high, but it should able to keep it cool.  I guess I'm immune to having a jet engine beside me...

    ---

In a few days I can do it with a 4790k... I have no 3xxx generation around... unless you count my firewall but I'm not going through that trouble to tear that thing apart for this lol

  • I monitor my temps in almost everygame and they are more or less like this in most of them:

    CPU:  60ºC

    GPU: 70ºC

    In PvZ Garden Warfare:

    CPU: 69ºC

    GPU: 75ºC

    Here are my specs:

    MB GA Z77-D3H

    2x4GB Kingston HyperX 1600Mhz DDR3

    GTX 660Ti (Zotac)

I5 3570K OC 4.2Ghz (Cooled with CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus)

    Seasonic M12II Evo Edition 620W

I can rarely hear the fans while playing games, but with PvZ GW even with a lot of sounds going on, i can hear the fans really loud.
