I've got what I'd call an average or a bit smaller TV. When we play split screen, I have to go up very close to be able to read any text. I don't think there's any way to change it.
Split screen can be very difficult on certain maps and game modes because the top and bottom of the display are cut off a bit. Sniping is a pain, and it's hard to see objective markers and the icons for enemy spawns.. I find moon base z particularly tricky on split screen.
If you find a way to change it, please do post again.
@asukojo, you play split screen quite a bit. Anything to add?
I've 65 inch TV on my game room and play pretty close to it (3 meters). But I am struggling play split screen with my daugther as well especially if I'm using the top screen and play as sniping/shooting character (pirates, cactus). My eyes hurt after 2-3 rounds and can't stand anymore.
I only play split screen during the boss hunt with the big one or when my little one wants to play Garden Ops with his daddy.

@asukojo What is the issue you are having? Is it that after playing a few rounds you are suffering from eye strain?
@Tjvelcronikon Can be worth playing around with your TV and console settings to ensure that you haven't changed the subtitle settings.
