You start to earn rank plates once you accumulated 100 lvl with all your characters combined. A rank plate has a big number and a small number. You increase your number by earning 100 lvl and this will earn you a new plate. The smaller numbers indicate how many of those 100 ranks are archived. After you've earned 1000 lvl, the color of your plate will change and it will be easier to know your level from the scoreboard.
I've not seen the color for anything above. I hope this helped.
