Re: Rainbow Star Concerns

@kapkarrot Coins are the main currency. Rainbow Stars are the premium currency. Prize bulbs are for the Prize Map. I don't think anyone is confused or overwhelmed. The PvE currencies are separate and they make sense too. Nothing to complain about there. Didn't GW2 also have 3 currencies: Coins, Stars and Rainbow Stars? Man I remember nearly quitting that game because of it's MMO-like economy. Too confusing.

    Here is my original post:

"The multiple currencies do remind me of an MMO economy.  And it's a big reason why I don't play them anymore.  Hopefully not the reason why I quit BfN..."

I never said it was confusing or overwhelming.  Those are your words, not mine.  Your exact quotes are "I don't think anyone is confused or overwhelmed" and "Nothing to complain about there".  Yet this thread is filled with posts from players who are unhappy with the rainbow star economy, including the 7 people who agreed with my comment.  Please don't misquote or misrepresent me.

Furthermore, I did not mention the GW2 economy.  I actually have little to say about that, because I was able to earn everything in-game without microtransactions.  MMO economies are quite different.  Most of them do have coins, badges, emblems, and other currencies that can be too much to track.  Typically that means having to play game modes you do not like just to keep your character's gear relevant and able to play the modes you do like.  If my only options to earn rainbow stars is to play a game mode I don't like, or to spend real money, then, yes, I do have a problem with that and find it unnecessary.

(Now that i think about it, I did not like Infinity Time in GW2.  However, I was able to buy all items through the Infinity packs with coins, which were available in every game mode.  And I appreciate that the GW2 team did that.)

Finally, there is quite a bit of snark in your reply, particularly your last sentences: "Didn't GW2 also have 3 currencies: Coins, Stars and Rainbow Stars? Man I remember nearly quitting that game because of it's MMO-like economy. Too confusing."  I don't know you, and I don't have a problem with you, so I am unsure of your motivation.  However, I think we can have an intelligent debate without the pointed sarcasm.

  • Well i won't be spending a single penny on any of these rainbow stars or anything else for that matter. I'm quite happy to just obtain new items through normal gameplay methods and don't care if i miss out on any time sensitive items.

Sorry EA/Popcap but I have a mortgage and a wife and kids to keep fed and clothed..

The biggest issue I have with this store is that things rotate through far too quickly and the FOMO that we've been talking about can hit people hard so they feel forced to buy rainbow stars (which is why many games do this in the first place unfortunately). As I've stated before if we knew when stuff was coming back, people would relax and just enjoy the game which is better for longevity as opposed to quick infusions of cash.

Once we finish with the current reward-o-tron offerings and the 4 PvE areas, the following currencies are almost worthless:

    • Coins (barring the XP machine which I never use and am not sure how popular it is).
    • Marshmallows.
    • Sheriff Badges.
    • Tacos.

We need something to do with these various currencies, why not have a fair exchange for rainbow stars? Of course I'd like to see more stuff in the reward-o-tron in the first place.

Again, we know that a game that is intended to have active development is different from a regular title that you buy and its a complete product, so paying a little extra to help with that isn't the problem, it's how it's being handled. I bought coin packs in GW1 & 2 not because I felt compelled to do so, but because I wanted to so I could support the games. More transparency and notifications on the store would go a long way with the community, something we need as the game is still on rocky ground right now.

  • @Iron_Guard8 Definitely agree and I also think the weekly challenges need to be overhauled.
If the weekly challenges are the only way to earn rainbow stars, then they need to be easier to achieve, rather than being so difficult people give up in frustration. It's bad enough that the prize map stars & weekly challenges for a month won't even be enough for HALF a legendary costume of the 3 or 4 available within a month (once the gifted stars have been used) without having near impossible challenges to try & earn the few you can.
I'd like them to be more team-oriented, rather than having everyone in your OWN team fighting against you as well as the opposition to fulfil the challenges.
GW2's "X" rainbow stars for a team win & "Y" for a loss was a much fairer system, which helped the teams to work together.

@ToastedSarnie Definitely, but they won't ever change it. Its abundantly clear these quests and events aren't meant to be fun. They are just meant to keep you playing. Its not a game. Its your job. There's that fear of missing out again, "I just have to log on today otherwise I'm going to miss all my quests!" Same could be said for the prize map, if you aren't playing every day, you just aren't going to complete it.

I shouldn't feel like I HAVE to play this game, I should WANT to play this game because its fun. I have to imagine this turns a large amount of people away from the game, including myself. So.... its counterproductive. There are much better games out there, which are not only more fun, but actually respect your time and won't treat you like a walking wallet.
  • @brady3176 I know, but last-ditch attempt to make the point before the game dies completely 😣 Something needs doing FAST - even on Xbox now, the PvP lobbies are pretty much empty.

After nearly a week of the Rux stuff.... apart from maybe the acorn Overlord thingy...
its all a bit mundane, nothing special and not in anyway worth the rainbow stars they are asking.

And now we know why the Reward-o-tron is still not been filled... they have been saving the stuff for Rux.
Hope there is better to come but as of now I'm completely over the Rux stuff and will be saving my meager amount of stars to see if there is anything worth it in the coming weeks.

  • @kapkarrot Rainbow Star Challenges for the weekly mode are annoying but necessary to keep people playing it. Maybe instead it could just be 10 Stars for Win, 5 Stars for Loss, 50 Star Limit per week?
  • @asabaida Yeah, some of the stuff they offer, who is going to buy that unless you're flexing your wealth? Popcap might aswell put in the Reward-o-Tron, people are going after costumes not emotes.

  • @brady3176 Daily quests are fine. You get a daily reroll, Prize Map earn rate is great, quests don't take long, etc. I don't know what you're talking about, I don't feel like I HAVE to play this game. I didn't play it for the second week of Food Fight because I didn't feel like it and wanted to play something else, ended up completing the Prize Map anyway. Felt like a game and didn't feel like a job.

Maybe we should remove quests and make the Prize Map only require 5 hours playtime because hello, some people have a life. Then I'll never feel like I HAVE to play the game and I can without fear leave the game if I don't like it and I won't feel like I'm missing out on free costumes.

@shurikeninjaAgain I disagree with quests being okay as they are. There was a thread out there explaining this really well, but I cant remember the name. Basically, they aren't designed to be rewarding.. or fun. They are simply JUST desigined to keep you playing. And if you don't do those quests... you will miss out, there's that fear again. Its a chore, that's what it is, and if you actually like BFNs gameplay, well too bad, some of these quests rip that away and literally force you to play a different way, like going into PVE regions to mindlessly grind vanquish brown coats with a certain ability. They encourage players to play a way that they don't like or that is simply unfun. Which... encourages players not to play the game... thats why i think they are counterproductive.

@shurikeninja The daily challenges are a lot better than they were & yes, you do have the re-roll, but that has only just been fixed & you don't necessarily get a 2nd option that suits you any more than the 1st one.
If you only have a short amount of time to play & want to work on (let's say) your Cactus challenges in PvE, then having a challenge to revive 25 team-mates as Scientist is annoying.
What I would love is either a range of daily challenges to choose from or more generic ones - lose the character-specific ones.

I also think it would be great if the character challenges available during each prize map were randomised, so maybe my characters for the month were Rose, Chomper, Pirate, All-Star but someone else's were Sunflower, Corn, Soldier, Scientist etc. That way maybe we'd have fewer problems of too many people playing the same thing which can cause issues.

But certainly the weekly event challenge for rainbow stars is very rigidly structured - you can only gain stars from that mode, often with limited character choice & a very specific goal, which is far from ideal for many players.
