Matchmaking will tend to place you into games-in-progress which have open slots available when you first pop in. This is, in theory, preferable to dropping you into a brand new lobby where you potentially need to wait for enough people to join to start. The only solution really is to stay in the lobby of the in-progress game regardless of whether you are winning or losing so that you're present when the next round starts.
