Skill based matchmaking in the mystery portal!

I don’t play this game anymore and when I played the mystery portal I was surprised to find pretty much every body in the lobby high ranked. But when I jumped on my low level account not a single person I’m the lobby was above level 100. Anyone else have this happen? Can someone do some testing to see if they have in fact implemented sbmm into this game?

I think you're right, Justin gave us a puzzle question for that, it's an enhancement that we have been asking for the boss hunt, where we got match based on our rank, skill and experience. This's to avoid high-rank player frustrated when being match with the random & clueless newbie.

I think they tested with Super Mix event portal, and I got a lobby where 85% of the team is high rank and max rank. It is a challenging one for sure, especially I've to careful when taunting somebody since they might haunt me back.

I think I like it, it makes the game more balanced, the max rank gets the challenge they're looking for, while the newbie can gain experience with an easier group.

    What are guys thinking?

    Note:

Probably some newbie will complain since they will struggle in hard/crazy boss hunt with another newbie.

  • The matchmaking system implemented here could be popcap testing the grounds for a potential competitive mode in GW3 if it's made.

For the boss hunt, the pseudo might be adjusted once the player passes normal level:

    MatchMe (level)

if (I've pass crazy & all team member has passed crazy level)

                 Join me

        otherwise

                 matchMe (level -1)

If a player has pass crazy, match me to a team that already pass crazy,

Otherwise, match me to a team that at least pass hard -> normal

If still can't find at team that at least pass normal, matchMe based on the rank.

See, to me this sucks. I really enjoy helping struggling players with boss hunts. (I'm not a one man army or anything but I like to think I make a considerable difference.) I've finished all 4 hunts on craaazy (though I am missing the squash reward due to a disconnect) so I am happy to play any difficulty. Now I feel like I'm going to end up in craaazy matches over and over again with people only interested in farming stars at the most efficient rate. I'm sure I'll get other matches occasionally but only if the craaazy matches are full. I'm also worried I'll end up in lobby of people looking to help newer players only to find the rest of the team is doing the same. (thus, helping nobody.)

On the reverse I'm sure many people will finally get the hats they have struggled for. Then again, they didn't feel like having a boss hunt this month... *grumble* *grumble* So I guess we won't know until the next one, the actual impact.

    A few thoughts.

All we have on this topic so far is a cryptic tweet from J Wiebe and our observations from the last portal.  So we don't know very much.  We will need to observe at least a couple more portals to get a real handle on what changes have been made.  For all we know it may have been a one time experiment.  And we have no idea if this will be implemented for boss hunt, though of course it certainly could be.  I will most likely continue to play boss hunts with people I already know rather than randoms.

My suspicion is similar to one voiced above, that this is testing out ideas for the future.  There seem to be a lot of complaints recently about matchmaking in turf takeover and I could see this as a step towards trying to better balance those lobbies.  I know I start playing with my friends, and before you know it there are six or so max ranks on one team.  Some players are amenable to switching teams to even out the odds and some players are not.  I could see parties and groups being split up by the game at some point in the future.

Gotta run, perhaps more on this later.
